Cleopatra, Art
Jonker, 2007. 18" X 24" Oil on Canvasette
| |||||||||||||||||
Continuing on Art Jonker's quest to portray
the human body, he couldn't resist creating his own version of
the legendary beauty Cleopatra. Based on the fact that
there is no accurate image of Cleopatra in existence, the
painting is completely made up from Art's imagination.
This scene is based on what might have occurred after
Cleopatra was smuggled into the palace in Alexandria while
Caesar was visiting/conquering. Although Caesar was 50
years old and 30 years Cleopatra's senior, Art chose not to
depict Caesar as an old balding man.
